Garmouth, Spey Viaduct View from NNW showing piers and navigation span

Description Garmouth, Spey Viaduct View from NNW showing piers and navigation span

Date 19/5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440692

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Spey Viaduct, Garmouth, Morayshire This viaduct was built to carry the Moray Coast line of the Great North of Scotland Railway over the mouth of the River Spey, which here forms a delta. This accounts for the great length and strength of this steel-truss structure. This view shows the viaduct from the north west. It has three double-Warren truss spans of 30.5m on each side of a 106.6m bowed truss main span. The contractors were Blaikie Bros., Aberdeen. The Moray Coast line, built primarily to serve the herring-fishing industry, closed in 1968, but this viaduct and its approaches were retained as a footpath. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
