Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Limekilns, Dufftown, Banffshire This is a pair of large single-draw limekilns set into a bank. These are unusually large for single-draw kilns. This view shows the kilns from the road side, with the draw arches clearly visible. The roadside location probably accounts for the siting of the kilns to form a courtyard for the use of lime carts. These kilns were part of a limeworking industry in west Banffshire, burning lime primarily for agricultural improvement. These kilns had been demolished by the mid 1990s.
