Scope and Content Workers' houses, Tamdhu Distillery, Morayshire This Scotch malt whisky distillery was built towards the end of the whisky boom of the 1890s. It was out of use from 1927-47, and extended twice in the 1970s, when it was largely rebuilt. In 1974 it was still using Saladin maltings. This view shows the houses provided for the distillery workers. This is an unusually large group, reflecting the large size of the distillery as built in the 1890s. The provision of cottages was necessary at a time when personal transport was unknown for manual workers, and when a distillery was not situated in a town or village. Most of the housing of this type has been sold out of distillery service. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
