Scope and Content The Mound, Sutherland This massive embankment was built across Loch Fleet by Thomas Telford mainly to carry his great road north to Wick and Thurso, but also to allow land round Loch Fleet to be reclaimed. Flap sluices allowed fresh water to leave but kept salt water out. This view shows the sluices from the sea side. Telford provided four sluices, and Joseph Mitchell added two more in 1837. In this view the tide is flowing, so the sluice doors are shut. The sluices still operate in the manner devised by Telford. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
