Littleferry, Icehouse General view looking S

SC 440368

Description Littleferry, Icehouse General view looking S

Date 1974

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 440368

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Ice house, Littleferry Pier, Sutherland This ice house was built in association with the masonry pier and its associated quay which were constructed for the Sutherland Estate in about 1820. The size of the ice house suggests that there was a large salmon fishery here at that time. This view shows the icehouse from the south west. The curved gable is unusually fine. The water tower on top is a 20th century addition. Ice houses like this were used for storing locally collected or imported ice for packing round salmon in transit to the London market.
