Whaligoe, Mill View from N showing kiln vent and aquaduct

SC 440351

Description Whaligoe, Mill View from N showing kiln vent and aquaduct

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440351

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Whaligoe Mill, Ulbster, Caithness This was a large water-powered corn mill, with two kilns, side by side, and an internal waterwheel.. The lade was partly in pipe, and partly on a dry-stone plinth. The mill appeared to have had its machinery removed. This view shows the mill from the west, with the kilns on the right. Note the remains of a revolving kiln ventilator, an unusual feature for the area. The mill has been converted into a house since this photograph was taken, with windows inserted into existing openings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
