Scope and Content Baligill Limeworks, Sutherland This is one of a series of limeworks situated along the north coast of Sutherland, and working a limestone seam which outcrops there. These works produced lime primarily for agricultural improvement. This view shows the front draw arch of the more recent of the two kilns at this works, built c1870. It was a three-draw kiln, with unusually narrow draw arches. The kiln has lost its top section but is otherwise well-preserved. The quality of the masonry in this kiln is unusually high, and is in marked contrast to that of the earlier kiln at this works. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
