Scope and Content Interior view of St Mary's Parish Church, Monymusk, Aberdeenshire In 1170 Gilchrist, Earl of Mar, established a community of Augustinian canons at Monymusk. The present church, although mainly modern, incorporates two principal features of the Augustinian priory-church: the west tower and the chancel arch. The chancel arch at the east end of the nave is supported by capitals of 'cushion' form with rounded shafts below. The arch is made up of three orders and is more elaborate than the west arch behind. The church, a typical mid-12th century parish church, is built in a Romanesque style. This term is used to describe buildings of this date in Europe which are characterised by the use of round arches, and thick walls to support the roof. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
