Scope and Content Detail of capitals on south-west piers of crossing inside St Nicholas Church, Union Street, Aberdeen Founded before 1151, St Nicholas was one of the largest medieval burgh churches in Scotland. The late 12th-century transepts known as the Drum and Collison Aisles and the 15th-century crypt known as St Mary's Chapel survive. These capitals at the tops of the shafts are carved in Transitional style and date to the late 12th/early 13th century. The capital to the left has foliage decoration; the other two are decorated with 'crockets' or 'water leafs'. The capitals are all surmounted by a square abacus. The main shaft, or respond, to the left is wider than the other two. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
