Scope and Content Sacrament house, St Mary's Collegiate Church, Cullen, Banffshire Already a parish church, St Mary's became collegiate in 1543. Collegiate churches had benefactors, in this case Sir Alexander Ogilvie, who supported priests whose principal duty was to say masses for the souls of the founders and their families. Presented by Sir Alexander Ogilvie of that Ilk, this sacrament house, a wall-cupboard made of carved stone, is on the north wall. The Eucharist was displayed within it as a focus for devotion whilst safe behind a grille. Shafts resting on Gothic-style corbels become Classical architraves at the top and frame two angels holding a monstrance aloft. The monstrance was used as a vessel for the Eucharist during religious processions. The text is taken from St John's Gospel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
