Scope and Content Chambered cairn, Balnuaran of Clava NE, Croy and Dalcross, Inverness-shire Three cairns lie in woodland on a NE to SW axis, each cairn having a kerb of large boulders and is surrounded by a circle of standing stones. A number of stones bearing cup-marks were built into the structure of these cairns. On the N side of the kerb of the NE passage-grave, the outer face of stone 20 is covered in cupmarks, one of which is ringed, and with a number of channels. The stone had fallen outwards and was discovered in 1931. Chambered cairns belong to the Neolithic, the period of the first farming peoples of Scotland, and were the burial places for local communities. The earliest tombs were built around 4000 BC, but the Clava monuments appear to date to around 2000 BC. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
