Scope and Content Chambered cairn, Invershin, Creich, Sutherland The ruined chamber is in a small area of deciduous woodland, and is only 200m from the shore of the Kyle of Sutherland. The chamber walls were constructed of 7 closely-set orthostats, 6 of which remain. The chamber is 3.9m long by 2.27m wide. The life of an archaeological field investigator can be pleasant and relaxing! An oak tree is growing in the centre of the cairn, and much of the cairn material has been removed. The original shape and size of the cairn cannot be determined. Chambered cairns belong to the Neolithic, the period of the first farming peoples of Scotland, and were the burial places for local communities. The earliest tombs were built around 4000 BC, but the building tradition lasted until at least 2500 BC. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
