Scope and Content Chambered cairn, Coille na Borgie South, Farr, Sutherland The North cairn and the South cairn lie end to end on a terrace on the east side of Strathnaver. The North cairn is in two parts, with a total length of about 60m, while the South cairn is 75m long overall. The passage is about 3m long, and between 0.35m and 0.5m wide. The chamber is exposed as a hollow in the N end of the cairn, having been cleared out in 1867. The chamber floor is covered with fallen cairn material. The ranging pole is beside an orthostat. Chambered cairns belong to the Neolithic, the period of the first farming peoples of Scotland, and were the burial places for local communities. The earliest tombs were built around 4000 BC, but the building tradition lasted until at least 2500 BC. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
