Scope and Content Retort house, Thurso Gasworks, Caithness Thurso gasworks was a typical small-town coal gasworks. Works of this type were common until the 1950s, and were then rendered obsolete by the development of a gas grid, and by the introduction of natural gas. This photograph shows the retort house, where the gas was made by heating coal in retorts. The large chimney, unusually built of stone, provided draught for the system which heated the retorts. By the time this photograph was taken in 1974 the works had closed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
