Scope and Content Sandside Harbour, Caithness This harbour was built by a local landowner, Major Innes, as a fishing station. It consists of two piers with angled heads enclosing a basin with a quayed landward side and a slipway. This view shows the harbour looking east, showing the two piers. The one on the left has its end extended to form a breakwater protecting the narrow harbour entrance. Note the storm damage to the landward end of the pier on the left. This harbour was built when there was government encouragement for the herring fisheries of northern Scotland. Latterly it functioned as a salmon and creel fishing station.
