Scope and Content Ice house, Phillips's Harbour, Harrow, Caithness Phillips's Harbour seems to have been built as a fishing station for herring and salmon. This ice house was presumably built to store ice to preserve salmon on the voyage to the London market, the main source of demand for Scottish salmon. This view shows the house from the front, with the gable of the vaulted chamber, and the earth covering of the sides and roof clearly visible. This house has had an antechamber, to reduce the flow of warm air into the ice store. This was part of a suite of buildings provided for the salmon fishery here, linked to a well-constructed pier and quay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
