Scope and Content White Horse Close, Canongate, Edinburgh White Horse Close, formerly Ord's Close, is the entrance to a court built for Lawrence Ord in the late 17th century. The White Horse Inn at the north end of the court was the starting point of one of the first regular stagecoaches to London. The buildings are a 20th-century renovation of the 17th-century inn and houses. The row of two-storey houses on the west side incorporate sections of the original buildings. On the east side, access to the upper floors is by modern forestairs and balcony. White Horse Close, once the Jacobite headquarters during Prince Charles Edward Stuart's (Prince Charles Edward Stewart or Bonnie Prince Charlie) brief occupation of Edinburgh in 1745. It was the home of William Dick, 1793-1866, farrier, who founded the city's Royal Dick Veterinary College. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
