Scope and Content Maltings from south-west, Benrinnes Distillery, Moray Benrinnes Distillery was established in 1826, only to be washed away in the great floods of 1829. It was rebuilt in 1835 by William Smith & Co. It was rebuilt in 1955, Saladin Maltings were installed in 1964, and the number of stills was increased from three to six in 1966. The whisky produced is used as part of Crawford's blended Scotch, and also released as a single malt. This shows the concrete Saladin boxes (named after their French inventor) below a moulded concrete mansard roof. Barley was laid on the pierced metal floor panels, some of which are shown in the raised position. These new maltings which mechanically turn the barley, were installed in 1964, and replace older floor maltings, in which the grains were turned by hand with shovels. Saladin boxes, invented in the 19th century in France, are concrete troughs with ventilated floor panels. Barley is poured into the box to a depth of 1.21m and mechanically turned by rows of Archimedes screws whilst air is blown through from below. This ensures the barley is evenly germinated before it is dried in the malt kiln. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
