Scope and Content 19th-century view of the tomb of Bishop Dunbar, St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen The existing cathedral is probably the fourth church on this site and mostly dates to the 15th century. It was damaged during the Reformation and ransacked by Cromwell's troops for stone to fortify Castlehill in 1650. The steeple collapsed in 1688. Gavin Dunbar, bishop 1518-32, was buried within the cathedral in the south transept which he founded. By the 19th century the transept was in ruins. His tomb, which still exists, probably dates to the late 16th century. In 1693, as a result of a religious disturbance, his effigy was broken in pieces, the inscription was defaced, and the top of the monument was removed. The existing cornice (along the top of the tomb) was erected shortly afterwards. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
