Scope and Content View of Parliament Square, St Giles' Cathedral and the Thistle Chapel, Parliament Square, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been the central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. It is a cross-church with additions, mainly on the south side, making its shape irregular. The most recent addition was the Thistle Chapel in 1911. Parliament Square, built on part of the kirkyard of St Giles where John Knox, minister from 1559-72, was buried, was the square for the new buildings for the Scottish Parliament in the 17th century. The life-size equestrian statue is of Charles II. Charles II was the last king crowned in Scotland in 1651. After an unsuccessful attempt in 1669 to unite the Scottish and English Parliaments, he did more than anyone to create the conditions and interests favourable to the eventual Union in 1707.
