Scope and Content Keiss Harbour, Caithness Keiss Harbour is an outstanding example of early 19th century fishing harbour design. It consists of an S-plan north pier, with a landing area at its base, a U-plan south pier, and a stub pier projecting towards the end of the south pier. This view shows the opening into the inner harbour from the entrance, or "stilling' basin. Beyond is a large herring-curing house, and in front of it the massive wave reflecting wall at the head of the stilling basin, with vertically-set masonry. The effect of this layout is to form an entrance basin with a side opening into the inner harbour. The entrance basin has a shelving end, with a massive wall at its head. These absorb most of the energy in the waves entering the harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
