SC 435408

Description Dunbeath, Portormin, Harbour View

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435408

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Fishing station, Balcladich, Dunbeath, Caithness This is a beach fishing station, though the fishers also used the immediately adjacent harbour at Portormin. The station consisted of about a dozen single-storey cottages, now ruined, two or three two-storey houses and a long curing-house/bothy range. This view shows the relationship between Balcladich and the harbour of Portormin in the background. On the left is the bow of a salmon coble used for fishing from the beach here, but now disused. By the time this photograph was taken beach fishing for salmon had ended here. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
