Dunbeath, Portormin, Ice-House General view from W

SC 435401

Description Dunbeath, Portormin, Ice-House General view from W

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435401

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Harbour, Portormin, Dunbeath, Caithness This is a rivermouth harbour, with quays along the north bank, protected by a masonry pier across the river mouth. In 1974 there were still the remains of a timber breakwater on the south side of the harbour. This view shows the icehouse set into the hillside above the quays along the river bank. It is an unusually well-built and maintained structure. Internally it has a rectangular vaulted chamber for the storage of ice, either local or imported. The vault of the icehouse is covered with earth as an insulator. This one has the gable limewashed so as to reflect the sun's rays, and reduce the heat transmitted to the ice within.
