Scope and Content Harbour, Portormin, Dunbeath, Caithness This is a rivermouth harbour, with quays along the north bank, protected by a masonry pier across the river mouth. In 1974 there were still the remains of a timber breakwater on the south side of the harbour. This view shows the line of quays from the west, with the stone breakwater at the end, and the timber breakwater on the right. The building on the quay was a fish-curing house, and there is an icehouse beyond. The flagstone quay walls have tended to collapse, and have been repaired in concrete. This harbour was built for the herring and salmon fishing which developed on this coast in the early 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
