Brora, Victoria Road, Worker's Housing General view from NE

SC 435380

Description Brora, Victoria Road, Worker's Housing General view from NE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435380

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Workers' housing, Brora, Sutherland This block of superior workers' housing looks out of place in the north of Scotland, but appears to have been built for workers in the Duke of Sutherland's engineering works. It was constructed of local bricks. This view shows the houses from the north east. They are very English in style, perhaps because the Duke had extensive estates in the Midlands of England. These houses were probably built for artisans brought up from the south because engineering craftsmen were not locally available. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
