Scope and Content Dingwall Canal, Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty This short stretch of canal is the artificially straightened and deepened course of the river Peffray. It was designed to allow small coastal sailing vessels to serve the town of Dingwall. This view shows the remains of the timber-piled quay at the Dingwall end of the canal. The attractiveness of a small navigation like this was severely diminished by the opening of the Inverness and Ross-shire Railway in 1862-3. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
