SC 435145

Description Foulis Point, Granary View of E facing elevation with external stair

Date 1974

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 435145

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old rent house, Foulis Point, Ross and Cromarty This is a warehouse for storing the rent paid in grain by the tenant farmers on the estate of the Munros of Foulis. The grain was shipped in small sailing craft for sale in urban markets. The building later served as a herring curing house. This view shows the house from the south. Note the two-flight external stair, an unusual feature. The building is constructed of rubble and harled. Rent houses were a feature of estates beside the sea in north east Scotland, where the climate encouraged the cultivation of cereals. They fell out of use when rents became money payments. This building is now a visitor centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
