Scope and Content Avoch Harbour, Ross and Cromarty The first part of this harbour was built in 1813-15 to designs by Thomas Telford. This was the west pier, a coursed rubble structure. In the late 19th century this was extended east in concrete, and an east breakwater added. This view shows the landward side of the harbour from the west pier. The fishing boat is berthed at a concrete quay, probably of post 1945 construction. The white building in the background was a warehouse. The harbour at Avoch was an important centre for fishing, but the increasing size and diminishing number of boats has ended that. The harbour is now used by pleasure craft and for amateur boat repair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
