Scope and Content Former brewery, Cromarty, Ross and Cromarty The development of Cromarty as a manufacturing, trading and fishing centre by George Ross from the 1780s involved the construction of this brewery, to provide an alternative to the whisky freely produced in the hinterland. This view shows the brewery from the north west. As it had been gutted for many years, it was by no means clear how it had operated, but it is likely that the front block was the maltings, and that brewing was carried on at the rear. Cromarty's late 18th century prosperity was short-lived, and such a large brewery proved uneconomic. After a long period of near-disuse it was converted c1990 into a study centre.
