Lovat Bridge View from SW, upstream

SC 435001

Description Lovat Bridge View from SW, upstream

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435001

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Lovat Bridge, Beauly, Inverness-shire This is one of Thomas Telford's major bridges, part of the new main road from Inverness to Wick and Thurso. It was partly rebuilt after a flood in 1892. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The ashlar construction is evident, as is the strong modelling effect of the double string course at the original carriageway level, the moulding of the arch rings, and the refuges above the cutwaters. The carriageway has been built up at both ends, to ease the gradients to the crown of the bridge, and the parapets built up to match, hence the slightly ungainly effect.
