Scope and Content Muirtown Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness This staircase of four locks raises the level of the canal from that of Muirtown Basin almost to that of Loch Ness. The engineer was Thomas Telford. In a lock staircase the bottom gates of one lock are also the top gates of the next one down. This view shows the lock-keepers' houses from the east. The Tudor style was popular at the time of their construction, but is unique on the canal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
