Scope and Content Muirtown Locks, Caledonian Canal, Inverness This staircase of four locks raises the level of the canal from that of Muirtown Basin almost to that of Loch Ness. The engineer was Thomas Telford. In a lock staircase the bottom gates of one lock are also the top gates of the next one down. This view shows the locks from the east. The buildings on the extreme left are part of Glen Mhor Distillery, with a pair of lock-keepers' cottages on the towpath. Since this photograph was taken the distillery buildings have been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
