Scope and Content Paisley Gas Works, Paisley, Renfrewshire Paisley Gas Works was founded to make town gas by carrbonising coal, and continued to do so until the early 1960s. The vertical retort installation then in operation was dismantled, but the works retained its holders. This view shows the three-storey offices with the holders behind. The house on the left was probably the manager's house for the 1827 works. In the west of Scotland coal gas was replaced by gas made from petroleum as an interim measure before natural gas was made available. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
