Scope and Content Annotated and stamped on the mounted print: 'Scottish National Buildings Record. Shire: Argyll. Place: Kilmartin Parish. Building: Duntrune Estate. Photographer: D.H.S. Date: 1962'. Gate Piers, Duntrune Castle, Argyll & Bute, from east This shows the main entrance to the estate with the castle in the background (far left). The smooth sandstone plinths support ornate wrought-iron gates and are surmounted by carved obelisk urns. There are decorative wrought-iron railings at each side of the piers. The gate piers were originally located at the entrance to Poltalloch House's courtyard and the two urns originally topped a pair of Tuscan columns at each side of the main entrance to the house. Muriel Malcolm redesigned the walled garden in the late 1950s and this was probably when the piers and finials were relocated. Poltalloch House had impressive gate lodges and when the family moved back to Duntrune, they were probably keen that there was a structure marking the main roadway. Duntrune Castle was built c.1600 on the shores of Loch Crinan and incorporates parts of an earlier structure. The building was renovated by the Malcolms of Poltalloch in c.1796, and Joseph G Davis undertook repairs and alterations to the castle between 1833 and 1835. The Malcolm family moved to the newly-built Poltalloch House in 1853 but returned to Duntrune in c.1953 when it was restored. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
