Preston Bridge General view

SC 432016

Description Preston Bridge General view

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 432016

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Preston Bridge, Preston, Berwickshire This is a fine later 18th century bridge with three segmental arches of considerable size. The design appears to have been influenced by that of the slightly earlier Coldstream Bridge. This view shows that the central span is larger than the flanking ones, and that the roadway is cambered. The roundels in the spandrels echo those in the Coldstream Bridge. Note that he abutments and piers have been strengthened. The scale and comparatively early date of this bridge indicate that Berwickshire was a prosperous county in the early period of agricultural improvement. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
