Scope and Content The Parade Ground, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh The Parade Ground was formed as a part of the 19th-century improvements to the Park, according to plans drawn up by Prince Albert. In the early 19th century this area comprised various gardens and orchards belonging to different proprietors. Since it was formed, the Parade Ground has been the focus of many activities, including the Royal Volunteer Review in 1860 and the Wet Review in 1881. It has also witnessed political meetings and religious meetings. In the 20th century, the Parade Ground has been the site of annual Miners' Galas. In 1977 it was used for Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee celebrations. It is also the site of Fringe Sunday, a colourful gathering associated with the Edinburgh Festival.
