Description Hawick, Commercial Road, Wilton Mills View of pedimented base of a large chimney

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 429977

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Part of Wilton Mills, Hawick, Roxburghshire Wilton Mills was one of the largest and oldest of the Hawick textile mills. By the time this photograph was taken textile production had ceased, and the buildings were in multiple occupation. This view shows the monumental base of a large chimney stalk which served the boiler house for the steam engine which powered part of the complex. The architectural treatment is a statement of the prestige of the mills. Wilton Mills was originally water-powered, and steam power was probably introduced when additional spinning capacity was installed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
