Scope and Content Hawick Station, Hawick, Roxburghshire Hawick was the terminus of the Hawick branch of the North British Railway, opened in 1849, but this station dates from the construction of the Border Union Railway from Hawick to Carlisle, which opened in 1862. This view shows the approach to the station and the main building, which had housing on the first floor. The single-storey wing on the right is a later extension. Note the large water tank on the left, for filling the tenders tanks of steam locomotives. The building of the line to Carlisle gave the North British its own cross-border route, which it marketed as the Waverley Route. Through trains ran to London via the Midland Railway's Settle & Carlisle line. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
