Scope and Content Detail of window shutter in hall of Dunderave Castle, Argyll and Bute Dunderave Castle, dating to the late 16th century, was a four-storeyed L-plan tower. Occupied until the early 19th century, it then became a roofless shell. In 1911-12 it was restored and extended by Sir Robert Lorimer for Sir Andrew northoble of Ardkinglas. This window in the great hall, also known as the Hall of the Red Banners, is relatively large. Many of the windows in the original tower are quite small. The wooden shutters with moulding and the wooden bench seats date to 1911-12. Robert Lorimer was born and trained in Edinburgh, and by 1905 he was famous for his restoration work. He worked with a carefully selected group of craftsmen who produced work of outstanding quality. Lorimer was knighted in 1911. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
