Wooden Anna, Chain Bridge View from SE

Description Wooden Anna, Chain Bridge View from SE

Date 9/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 427606

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Suspension footbridge, Wooden, by Kelso, Roxburghshire This very modest and altered structure is nevertheless a relic of the earliest days of suspension bridge building in Scotland. Its hook-and-eye chains are the most primitive type of blacksmith-made suspension chains of c1820. This is a view of the bridge, looking along the deck. The hook-and-eye construction of the chains is clear, as are the other very simple details of the ironwork. This little bridge was probably intended mainly for use by fishermen. It is possible that the chains were second-hand, but they may well have been made in emulation of those on better-known pioneering suspension bridges. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
