Scope and Content Kelso Bridge, Kelso, Roxburghshire This bridge was designed by John Rennie, and was his first masterpiece, precursor of his more celebrated London Bridge. It has five semi- elliptical spans, and the rounded cutwaters support coupled Tuscan engaged columns. This view shows the bridge from the south west, with the town of Kelso and the tollhouse on the left, The corbelled string course is typical of Borders bridges. This was the first large bridge in Scotland to take full account of the improvements in bridge design developed in France during the 18th century. This is evident in the level roadway and the slender piers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
