Scope and Content Allegorical painting from Moray House, Moray House, Edinburgh Moray House was built for Mary, Dowager Countess of Home in 1618 and given to her daughter, Countess of Moray in 1643. It was visited by Charles I, and Cromwell lived here on two occasions. It is now a teachers' training college. Moray House, once one of the grandest of Canongate mansions, has some intricately carved plaster ceilings and panelling inset with allegorical paintings thought to be by the painter, Robert Norie, and the designer, Richard Cooper. The Norie family were leading decorative and landscape painters in Scotland in the early 18th century. The family business, founded by James, lasted for four generations until it was sold in 1850. His son, Robert, had an identifiable personal style. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
