Scope and Content Entrance to Chessel's Court, Canongate, Edinburgh Chessel's Court was built by Archibald Chessel in 1748 around a large garden with fine views to Arthur's Seat to accommodate 'persons of standing'. By 1769 the building on the south side of the court, Chessel's Buildings, had become the Excise Office. The entrance to the court from the Canongate is through modern arcades in the north block, reconstructed in 1963 when the buildings were completely restored and the upper storeys of the north block supported on columns. Deacon Brodie attempted to break into the Excise Office in 1788. The attempt failed and he fled immediately to Amsterdam. Pursued, he was brought back to Edinburgh to stand trial, and was hanged on 1st October 1788. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
