Scope and Content Memorial to Adam Smith in the Canongate Kirkyard, Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh The Canongate Kirk was built in 1688 by James Smith, at the instigation of James VII, from money left to the Crown by a rich merchant, Thomas Moodie. It is a place of worship for the Royal family when they are in residence at Holyrood Palace. The wall-monument to Adam Smith, erected about 1790, is set in a round-arched recess on the west side of the churchyard in the south corner. Adam Smith, philosopher, economist and author of 'The Wealth of Nations' was born in Kirkcaldy in 1723. He lived at nearby Panmure House when he was employed as Commissioner of Customs in Edinburgh from 1778 until his death in 1790. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
