Scope and Content The High Street, Edinburgh The High Street lies at the heart of the Old City of Edinburgh. Its fortunes have fluctuated from prosperity to decay. In this illustration one of the ten Old Town cisterns may be seen, outside John Knox's House. The Old Town had a considerable population and providing clean fresh water was crucial. Most houses did not have piped water so people had to visit the wells, as can be seen here. The illustration also shows the Tron Kirk, with its original tower, before the Great Fire of 1824, and further up, the crowned tower of the St Giles' Cathedral may be seen.
