Scope and Content Carved lintel from Warriston's Close, High Street, Edinburgh Warriston's Close, so narrow 'that there is hardly space for fresh air', was originally Bruce's Close. It led off the High Street down to the Nor' Loch but was interrupted by the building of Cockburn Street in 1856. The upper Close, dating from the 16th century, is now incorporated in the west wing of the City Chambers. A 16th-century lintel over a doorway on the west side of the Close is inscribed: 'GRATIA.DEI.ROBERTUS.BRUISS.' or 'Robert Bruce gives thanks to God'. Warriston's Close was named after Sir Archibald Johnstoun of Warriston who was instrumental in drawing up the National Covenant in 1638. His house on the west side of the Close was built by Robert Bruce of Binnie in c.1566. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
