Scope and Content 20th-century plan of the interior of St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh The High Kirk of St Giles has been a central feature of the Old Town for nearly 800 years. Its central tower with open crown forms a distinctive feature of the sky-line of the city. The plan shows the cruciform structure of the church: the nave and choir forming one arm, and north and south transepts forming the other arm of the cross. This basic plan was extended as chapels were added, making the overall shape irregular. In 1387 the body of St Giles was broadened by the building of five chapels south of the nave, the beginning of piece-meal additions for individuals and incorporations which altered the original cruciform design plan.
