Scope and Content Former or Old Drygrange Bridge, near Newstead, Roxburghshire This four-span bridge was designed by Alexander Stevens. It has an unusually long segmental main span - 31m - with shorter flanking semicircular spans. At the south end is a small semicircular accommodation arch. This view from the south west shows the accommodation arch on the right and the substantial piers, with triangular cutwaters carried up to form refuges at road level, The corbelled string sourse marks the level of the original roadway. The alteration of the original profile of the roadway was made to make it more suitable for north-bound motor traffic. It has reduces the former elegance of the bridge, which was highlighted by the blind circular openings on either side of the main span. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
