Scope and Content Netherdale Mill, Dale Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire Netherdale Mill was founded in 1857 by J & W Cochrane to make tweed. It had two four-storey spinning blocks and a block of single-storey weaving sheds. This view shows the 1857 mill. The shape of the gable shows that the roof has a double ridge, The castellated stair tower is unusual. And indicates that the owners wished to make a statement about their importance. This was the largest of the Galashiels mills. By the time this photograph was taken it was partly occupied by the Scottish College of Textiles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
