Scope and Content Netherdale Mill, Dale Street, Galashiels, Selkirkshire Netherdale Mill was founded in 1857 by J & W Cochrane to make tweed. It had two four-storey spinning blocks and a block of single-storey weaving sheds. This view shows the 1873 mill on the right, and the 1857 one on the left. Though similar in proportions, the later mill has a simpler glazing pattern, and lacks the castellated top of the stair tower on its earlier neighbour. This was the largest of the Galashiels mills. By the time this photograph was taken it was partly occupied by the Scottish College of Textiles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
